Dakar’s Raw Material Company presents Who said it was easy, an exhibition which launches a 1-year program dedicated to individual freedoms, their perception and their restriction. The program will include, exhibitions, workshops, screenings, think tanks and a publication. Who said it was easy is the first of the series of activities that will focus on a variety of media examining the current situation in Senegal and the treatment of minorities and marginality in Africa. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from a poem by Audre Lorde (1934-1992), African-American activist whose work dealt with discrimination, marginalization and sexuality.
With extensive documentation – including press clippings, audio-visual equipment and cards – this exhibition seeks to ask, on the basis of media production, the question of treatment of marginality. It also asks a more fundamental question: how do we defend human rights and find a structure to which the society can adhere for individual freedoms, especially regarding sexuality, which are determined by a complex heritage as well as contemporary forms of social conditioning?
